Michelin and Voyantic Working Together to Overcome the Challenge of Tire Tag Quality Assurance

Article in RFID Journal - Michelin Ramps Up Tagging Program, Launches RFID-based App:
“In 2012, Michelin began consulting with Voyantic to develop a testing system to be used with Hana RFID tags before they left its facility, and again at Michelin’s factory before they were placed into the tires, recalls Niina Aurén, Voyantic’s RFID testers product manager. “They wanted a reliable testing solution for high-speed testing while guaranteeing all the tags would work similarly,” she states. Voyantic developed a solution that includes its Tagsurance tester—which employs the EPC Gen 2 protocol to measure the tag’s operational sensitivity—and the Snoop Pro coupling element, which functions as a near-field UHF reader antenna. The solution is designed to provide wide-band testing, from 800 to 1100 MHz, to cover the entire UHF band within which the tag could transmit. Tires are composed of rubber and steel plies that create a detuning effect, she says, so it’s that much more important for a tester to confirm that the entire RF band is working properly.”

RFID Measurement System Found the Market

Article in Tekniikka & Talous magazine on 17 February 2012, written by Mari Heikkilä:
“The use of radio-frequency identification i.e. RFID will increase in the near future, which means growth also for the Finnish company Voyantic. The company produces RFID testers that measure the performance of tags for product developers and companies utilizing tags. With the help of the Voyantic’s measurement device, a tag manufacturer is able to design tags aimed for various purposes. The design work is crucial, since each RFID tag has a radio frequency operating antenna, whose tuning may change remarkably when placed on different materials.”

ARC Center Aims to Avert Clashing Requirements

Article in RFID Journal - Arkansas Radio Compliance Center (ARC) to make RFID tagging compliance easier using a tag-testing system from Voyantic Ltd.:
“The ARC Center, located next to the university’s RFID Research Center, in Fayetteville, Ark., began testing inlays last year, during the first week of December. The facility features an anechoic chamber (designed to prevent RF signals from leaking through its walls) and a custom-designed tag-testing system from Voyantic that includes RFID test hardware mounted outside the chamber, as well as four reader antennas installed within the chamber. The chamber is designed for testing inlays in a variety of simulated environments, such as tags attached to apparel on hangers or stacked products, as well as from a variety of antenna angles.”
